Best Practice

The Code

A framework for responsible busking developed with councils, performers, and the Musicians' Union.

Best Practice Guidelines

These principles ensure busking remains a positive experience for everyone — performers, businesses, and residents alike.

01

Share the Space

Public space belongs to everyone. Be mindful of other performers, local businesses, and residents. Cooperation is the foundation of a healthy street culture.

02

Volume Control

Sound should be at a level that enhances the street without causing nuisance. Be aware of indoor workspaces and residential windows nearby.

03

Variety is Key

Keep the street atmosphere fresh by shifting locations or taking regular breaks. This prevents acoustic fatigue for those in fixed locations.

04

Spontaneity

Protect the right to spontaneous performance. Avoid rigid booking systems that turn public space into a scheduled stage.

05

Dialogue First

If issues arise, start with conversation. Most problems between buskers, businesses, and residents can be resolved through mutual respect and open communication.
